Research
The KOALA at Mater Research Program is employing a wide variety of approaches which includes basic, clinical and applied research aimed at understanding the underlying causes of child obesity and its effects on mental, metabolic and cardiovascular health.
Thus the program brings together researchers and the community, including basic scientists, geneticists, clinicians, nursing and allied health (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians and exercise physiologists) and psychologists to address this major child public health problem. Our community partners include Scouts QLD, the South East Area Alliance of General Practitioners, the Heart Foundation and Diabetes Australia QLD.
KOALA at Mater will bring new knowledge via a "Genes to the Communities" paradigm to improve clinical outcomes of children and their families affected by obesity.

The major intervention part of the program involves a randomised controlled trial of the effects of a Healthy Lifestyle Behavioural Management program which combines a 16 session Lifestyle Triple P program for parents with a Scouts QLD Active Camp Program over 3 week-ends.
